INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION
iui
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a minimally invasive, common fertility treatment that can help increase the chances of becoming pregnant.
For patients experiencing minor infertility issues or when using donor sperm, an IUI procedure can be a beneficial solution. With IUI, we carefully inject concentrated sperm directly into a patient’s uterus to increase the chances of inseminating the eggs.
The first step is to begin taking fertility medications to stimulate the ovaries and produce multiple eggs. We then conduct a series of blood tests and monitor the ovaries with ultrasound sessions to determine the optimal time for the IUI procedure. A thin, minimally invasive catheter places the sperm in the uterus to inseminate the eggs.
IUI can be helpful for:
- Ongoing infertility issues
- Sperm quality
- Cervical mucus problems
- Donor sperm use
- Individuals or LGBTQ couples
For patients who need help conceiving, IUI is less invasive, has fewer risks, and is often less expensive than other fertility treatments.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FAQs
Is sperm quality a factor for IUI?
Yes. Both the quantity, motility (activeness), morphology (shape) play a role with IUI. To help increase the odds of fertilization, the collected sperm is “washed” in a lab to utilize the best sperm and to remove seminal fluid and potentially other impurities.
Who might benefit from an IUI procedure?
If you’re having on-going fertility challenges, an IUI procedure may help. It requires fewer steps than other fertility treatment, and is also a cost-effective option. IUI also helps couples, our LGBTQ friends, or individuals seeking a sperm donor for insemination.
When is the best time to have an IUI procedure?
For the best chance of conceiving, timing is everything. Prior to an IUI procedure, we frequently recommend fertility medication to stimulate the ovaries in order to produce as many eggs as possible. A series of blood tests and ultrasound monitoring helps narrow the window for the best time to schedule the procedure.
