A sperm analysis evaluates a man’s fertility by assessing the health and viability of his sperm. A typical male fertility typically includes:

Sperm Count: This refers to the number of sperm present in a given volume of semen.

Sperm Motility: This measures the percentage of sperm that are moving and their movement patterns. Healthy sperm should be motile and capable of swimming forward in a straight line.

Sperm Morphology: This examines the shape and structure of the sperm. Abnormally shaped sperm may have difficulty fertilizing an egg.

SPERM PRESERVATION

Also known as sperm cryopreservation, sperm preservation freezes and stores the sperm for future use. It’s a common preservation method due to chemotherapy, radiation, or other medical treatments that may impair fertility. Freezing sperm also provides future family planning options people who are not ready to have children but want to ensure they have viable sperm available in the future. Sperm banks also freeze donor sperm to maintain its viability.

Incinta’s custom-designed facility was once a bank, and we keep your frozen sperm safe and secure in a former bank vault.

Are there different types of semen analysis tests?

Yes. There are different types of sperm analysis tests for different reasons. A basic sperm analysis which we described above is the first step to determine potential male infertility.

Other tests include:

  • Semen Fructose Test
  • Anti-sperm Antibody Test
  • Genetic and DNA Tests
  • Retrograde Ejaculation Test
  • Post-Vasectomy Semen Analysis
  • Testicular Sperm Extraction

Male fertility challenges need to be examined in order to provide good decisions for any fertility treatment plan. We’re here to help.

How is the sperm analysis test conducted?

The patient provides his doctor with a semen sample, which can be prepared through masturbation, sex followed by pulling out and ejaculating into a container, or sex using a specially designed collection condom. If the patient is unable to produce a sample through these methods, there are also ways of sperm retrieval techniques available.

Once the sample has been provided, the semen will be tested in a laboratory for the aforementioned qualities.

How do I prepare for a sperm analysis?

In order to yield the best possible results, it’s important that patients take proper preparations before making the sample.

This includes:

  • Ejaculate (once) fours days prior to your test, and then avoid ejaculation three days before your test.
  • Avoid any medications that may negatively impact the results, as instructed by your doctor.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and drugs for at least two days before the test
  • Properly hydrate in the days before your test and the day of it.
